Ridgeline House
Where the canyon meets the sky
The clients came to us with a clear feeling rather than a floor plan: they wanted a home that felt like exhaling. A place where mornings start slow, where children drift between indoors and out, where the canyon's rhythm sets the pace rather than the city's.
We responded with a series of low-slung volumes that follow the ridge's natural contour. Board-formed concrete anchors the home to the hillside while expansive glazing frames panoramic canyon views from nearly every room. A central courtyard creates a protected outdoor living room — sheltered from wind, open to sky.
Every material was chosen for how it would age in this specific climate. The cedar cladding will silver naturally over the coming decades, while the concrete will develop the subtle patina that marks the passage of seasons. This is a house designed to look more beautiful with time.
Structure
Board-formed concrete foundation and retaining walls, steel moment frame for the cantilevered living volume, exposed Douglas fir post-and-beam throughout.
Exterior
Western red cedar rain screen cladding, standing-seam zinc roof, thermally broken steel-framed glazing systems with integrated shading.
Interior
Sanded concrete floors with radiant heat, white oak millwork and cabinetry, hand-troweled lime plaster walls, custom blackened steel hardware throughout.
Sustainability
Passive solar orientation, 12kW rooftop solar array, greywater recycling system, native drought-tolerant landscaping, all-electric mechanical systems.
Landscape
Terraced native plantings integrated with natural hillside, fire-resistant perimeter design, stone-lined seasonal drainage channels, edible garden terraces.
Systems
Whole-home automation, high-efficiency heat pump HVAC with ERV ventilation, structured wiring, EV charging, emergency battery backup.
